Oral Hygiene

Research shows that poor oral health can contribute to the development of heart disease and increase the risk of stroke. It can also pose a serious threat to those with health problems such as diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis.

Poor oral hygiene can also lead to gum disease, or Gingivitis, which can cause Periodontitis if not treated by your dentist. Periodontitis involves an inflammation of the gums and bone loss, and can also lead to teeth loss if untreated.

At Family Dental Care we make it our priority to ensure you and your family’s  oral health is at its very best, we place significant importance in preventative care and achieving and maintaining optimal health for our patients.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for everyone to ensure healthy teeth and overall well being and vitality. It is recommended that you visit your dentist every 6 months to achieve this.

Remember to clean your teeth correctly to help remove bacterial plaque, leaving a clean tooth surface. Brushing and flossing your teeth helps you to maintain a healthy mouth.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are finely sculptured shells which are bonded to the front of the tooth to change their colour or shape, make them look straighter, minimise gaps or lengthen them if they are short or chipped. Dental veneers can help create beautiful, flawless smiles.

Porcelain Veneers can help improve the colour and shape of your teeth and help it to return to its natural appearance. Porcelain Veneers can also be used to fix chipped teeth as they are able to cover the front tooth thus replacing the chipped area. Many people have gaps in between their teeth, porcelain veneers are able to seal small gaps and help align teeth returning them to their correct placement, resulting in a straighter smile.

Anyone who suffers from dental issues such as discoloured, chipped or crooked teeth, can enjoy incredible results with porcelain veneers. By adding a thin layer of porcelain to the tooth, the appearance of the tooth can be significantly improved, as only minimal tooth preparation is required.

They can also last a long time, if well looked after they can last from 10-15 years.

White Fillings

White Fillings do not contain mercury and are an ideal choice for achieving long term strength in filled teeth. Teeth that are heavily filled with large silver amalgam or mercury fillings are at risk of fracturing because the tooth is spread apart by these traditional filling materials. These teeth can be rebuilt with porcelain inlays, which holds the tooth together as opposed to spreading it apart, preserving the remaining healthy tooth structure allowing teeth to be safely and aesthetically restored achieving a more attractive smile.

In the past:

Silver amalgam or mercury fillings clearly visible and aesthetically unattractive.

Today:

White Fillings achieve an aesthetic and natural looking finish whilst avoiding the use of mercury. They also serve to hold the  filled teeth together rather than spreading them apart.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

When your wisdom teeth align properly and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, this does not always happen.

The removal of wisdom teeth is necessary when your wisdom teeth are prevented from properly erupting within the mouth. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum and even remain trapped (impacted) beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth may take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt successfully.

Most dentists and oral health specialists will recommend the removal of wisdom teeth, as early extraction will help to eliminate the problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth, such as:

•    Bacteria and plaque build-up.
•    Development of cysts.
•    Tumor development, infection and jaw and gum disease.
•    Crowding of the mouth and pushing straight teeth out of alignment.

Our expert team at Family Dental Care will be happy to answer any questions you have and to advise you in this area.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns or ‘caps’ are custom made restorations that repair badly damaged, chipped/ fractured teeth, broken down fillings, discoloured or weak teeth to their natural shape and colour. A crown covers a weak tooth above the gum line. There is no limitation to what part of the mouth they can be used in and are also used to reshape teeth and improve the general appearance of your mouth.

Bridgework is used to replace one or more missing teeth.  This is done by fixing the replacement to two crown teeth on either side of the gap. Bridges are normally made of precious metal, however if the bridge will show then porcelain is bonded to the base.

Although bridges require your commitment to serious oral hygiene they can last for up to ten years or more.

Custom-Fitted Mouth Guards

Anyone that participates in a contact sport is vulnerable to a dental injury. Wearing a mouthguard will cushion blows to the face and neck, hopefully preventing any teeth, lip, cheeks and tongue injuries.

Custom-fitted mouth guards are designed especially for you to fit your mouth and thus providing the best protection because of their close fit, comfort and cushioning effect.

Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)

Endodontics saves teeth that would otherwise have been extracted as well as acting as a preventative measure and treatment for dental pulp disorders. Signs of pulp damage can include pain, swelling, sensitivity to varied temperatures and discoloration of the tooth.

Endodontics, which is also commonly known as Root Canal Therapy, can be treated at our practice through various appointments. The treated area can function normally and can be maintained with routine dental checks and proper oral hygiene measures.

Teeth Whitening

Like hair and skin, teeth can vary in colour. Some are darker or more yellow than others, even when they are healthy. Teeth can become darker as people age and also with the consumption of staining substances like tobacco, red wine, tea, coffee etc.

Teeth whitening is one of the least expensive and least invasive ways of enhancing your smile. There a few options that you can choose from to achieve a new brighter smile, including an take home whitening kit tailor made for you or an intensive ‘in chair’ light activated teeth whitening treatment using patented technology that whitening your teeth instantly.

Whitening is a process where the tooth discolouration is ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. Through chemical means It removes the staining agent. Results depend on the severity of the discolouration.

Periodontics

Periodontal disease affects the gums, bone and supporting structures of the teeth and is a major causing factor of premature tooth loss. Both adults and children should be routinely checked for gum disease.

Gum disease can be controllable, some factors that can contribute to gum disease include smoking, stress and dental neglect.
In addition gum disease can be a contributing factor to other health issues you may have including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and premature births.

Symptoms to watch out for include:

•    Permanent teeth that are loose or changing position
•    constant  bad taste in your mouth or bad breath
•    Pus between teeth and gums
•    Receding gum line

If you are concerned about your gums please do not hesitate to speak with our team at Family Dental Care.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is a specialist field that relates to managing irregularities and abnormalities of the teeth, jaw and face. More specifically orthodontic treatments focus on straightening crooked, gapped, overlapping and overcrowded teeth.  Orthodontic treatments are used to improve how teeth work and the appearance of them as well. If you teeth do not meet correctly, this can put an unnecessary strain on the muscles of the jaw, causing jaw and joint problems to develop and as a result sometimes can even cause headaches. In cases such as this undergoing orthodontic treatment can help you to bite more evenly and thus reducing the strain on your mouth. Both Fixed and removable braces can be used to accomplish this.

Braces are no longer just for children; at Family Dental Care we offer adult orthodontics as well as part of our treatment plans, including Invisalign which is an invisible way to straightening teeth.

Invisalign are small colourless gumshields that gradually move the teeth by using a series of these aligners.

If this is something you would be interested in learning more about or other orthodontic measures please contact one of our team members at Family Dental Care.
